Default how to change windows 8 to classic view?

I have a friend that has Windows 8.
I have a great dislike for it and want to change it to the
Windows 7, or classic view, so I can accomplish something.

How?

I've installed this free software several times for friends who feel the same way about Win 8's interface.

Note: I haven't tried it on 8.1 yet....so YMMV!

That stupid screen is called "Metro". There are a bunch of tweaks you can do to make it almost like Win7, but it's always going to be Win8, and you can get close, but not perfect. That's fine with me. Close would be good enough. You're not alone, there are a crapload of folks who hate it.

Here's an article to assist. Lots of little tweaks. Personally, I tend to keep a log of changes so if I A) mess something up, I can revert, or B) I have to reload and go back I can fix it. If you can tweak the underlying OS rather than install an application to reach your goals, you're better off.

The real problem is security and backwards compatibility. We keep sacrificing security for it, and at some point, we do need to stop and simply accept that the hardware we have is out of date.

From a SANS e-mail:

--Windows 8.1 Comes with Automatic Disk Encryption
(October 17, 2013)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 ships with automatic device encryption enabled by
default, but the feature's hardware requirements mean that it works only
on newer systems.

http://money.cnn.com/2013/10/17/tech...e/windows-8-1/
[Editor's Note (Shpantzer): Maybe it's OK to have this new version of
Windows work only with newer devices. Backward compatibility is one of
the consistent security disablers and at some point, we have to decide
if backward compatibility is worth the tradeoff.
(Murray): A step in the right direction. Developers continue to be
reluctant to choose "safe out of the box."]

Is 8.1 a free upgrade, if she decides to go that route?

I installed a free mod that adds a Start button for normal navigation. Don't have the link but you can google it.

An Apple a day keeps the Windows away?
