Default gear whine?

Can someone tell me what's the primary source of the turbine-like whine that the ST produces? Somebody told me it was square-cut gears, but then why does the sound increase when I simply rev the engine in neutral? I don't suppose there's any way to decrease that sound a little?

Are you trolling?

That sound is from the gear driven counter balancers. No, you cannot reduce it. Why would you wish to?

Why would you think it could be gearing if it's in neutral? Where roughly do you think it is coming from? Mine doesn't whine, but there's an alternator in the top of the block, that is geared to engine revs.

Use the Search button and search for the term JETSON. Everything you could want to know about the turbine whistle/whine that is the signature sound of the 1300V4 engine.

The counter balancers are also gear drive and you actually set the lash by "the gear whining noise".

The fad of adjusting ended early in the ST's history.
If you just feel the need exercise caution.
Very easy to do more harm that good in this area.
Them needing "adjustment" is a rare occurrence unless you have split the cases.
I believe we've had a grand total of Zero ST engines apart.

I actually kinda like the whine.
It gives the ST a distinctive sound that can be recognized even if it can't be seen.
I was sitting on the ground about to plug a tire when I heard the distinctive sound of a ST approaching from behind.
Next thing I know I have a fellow ST owner sitting next to me asking "what ya doing - need some help?"

I'm always watching for bikes of all kinds, but especially ST's. If I see one stopped, I always stop and see if there's a problem of some sort. I can't remember a time I couldn't spend a couple hours helping out a rider, whether I'm on the bike or in the truck.
