Default Toying with the thought of a K1600 GT or GTL

The brief spat of nice weather coupled with the riding talk of some co-workers have got me thinking of riding again.

Then, I happened upon a used 2012 BMW K1600 GTL at a local dealer for just under $13,000.00. By the time I got there, however, it was sold.

I checked into the pricing and financing of a 2016 and it was about the same as what I would have been paying for the 2012 (longer term).

Since then (yesterday), I've done a few quick internet searches and found another 2012 for $10,000.00 firm. Looks in good shape. So, I emailed seller.

But, I am intrigued by the 2016's still.

Then, I sit back and think about how often I would ride it. Probably a lot at first due to the novelty but, I am no longer in the LD sport so, I'm just not sure I'd get the use out of it to justify the cost.

(Heavy sigh)

Have you considered something less expensive but still useful? Something with some versatility?

For example I have been "shopping" for a Suzuki V-Strom 650. Mildly dirt/offroad capable but still comfy on the road, fuel efficient, and inexpensive to buy.

I am keeping my FJR as my primary bike but plan on using the Wee-Strom as a commuter/everyday ride.

It helps that I acquired a 2002 BMW R1150R. The benefits of having a second bike have proven to me that one motorcycle is just not enough.

But I am not excited about the cost of owning a K1600 BMW.

No VStrom for this man. He's been wanting a 1600 for years.

Cheapest way out of this is a used 1600. You can always sell it for what you paid for it if you tire of it or discover it's too expensive for your taste to fix/maintain.

In the event you find it satisfactory keep it or splurge for a new one.

Have you researched its reliability? 40% of new BMWs require warranty repairs according to CR.

God knows what the ones out of warranty need.

I just treat myself to a VFR1200X, I ran the F for 4 months over Christmas and although a lovely machine just too heavy on my wrists. The VFR1200X however is a real fun ride with loads of grunt luggage and with Hondas reliability.
You know you can buy a bargain with high mileage too...

Scotland earlier this week, I did a thousand miles and was as fresh as a daisy, theres loads of room to move about and even ride standing for a while.

I think BMWs are great bikes to own - as long as they are still under warranty.

A friend of mine had a R1200RT. Changed for a K1600. The last time I saw him, his bike was for sale (too far for you Joe) and he was shopping for a R1200RT...

I'm looking to get an r1200 gsa, I don't want a bike that's faster than the mighty ST 1300 and the gt or gtl would have me back to my old ways of running the road at 135mph. came to that conclusion when I test rode the gtl back in '14

There is a used VFR1200 at my local dealer that I looked at last weekend. No luggage but, it can be ordered.

The used K1600GTL deal that I found was already sold. Found another one for less but, then I got a nice little letter from the IRS saying that they liked me so much back in 2015 that they want more of me.

So, there goes the K1600 idea.

But, the VFR might be do-able. Don't like the VStroms for some reason.

Hayabusas are playing around in the back of my mind too.

All this thinking about bike has me reminiscing about my ST1300. I had it just perfect.

Except it wasn't black.

You do know that used ST1300s are out there in good numbers and can be had for not much money. You already know pretty much all there is to know about them and have access to a forum that would LOVE to help you set another one up properly.

You know you want one!
