"Why would you want a fuel cell on the ST1300. Do you ride 300+ miles without stopping? Seems to me stock fuel capacity is plenty for mere mortals."

My ST is going to be used primarily for Rallying and Iron Butt long distance rides. While I certainly fit the mere mortal category, I can easily ride 5 or 6 hours without needing to stop if I have the fuel. Most IBA rides require that you stop at least every 350 miles, so I'd like to be able to go that far and still have a gallon or two in reserve. Plus, I will never have a passenger on this bike. I guess this falls into the same category as why I think I need 3 GPS units and 2 radar detectors on it too...

Yep, another reason to have one for LD Rallies is that some places in the West and North do not have gas stations around every block. There are places in Nevada where the nearest gas station might be close to your mileage limit away, especially if you're flying at LD speeds. ;-)

And at night, a lot of stations shut down (i.e., not 24 hours).

Riding at the 70 mph speed limit, I could ride about 400 miles. My butt didn't like it much, however. But, it's nice to know you can.

Usually, I stop at around 300 miles and fuel up. That allows me to stretch a bit and get the kinks out.

But the biggest reason to use an aux tank is to limit the number of your gas stops. Each stop takes from 10 to 20 minutes depending upon how fast you are. I used to be fairly fast. Now, I don't really care that much. ;-)

My first BBG I did without an aux tank. A BBG is 1500 miles in 24 hours. It took me 11 gas stops. I timed my stops. I was able to maintain 10 minute stops the whole time. That's 110 minutes that I could have been .

The next BBG I did was with an aux tank.

I did it with only 5 gas stops. That's a savings of 60 minutes or an hour nap. To an LD Rider, that's important.

So, there you are. There are several reasons that LD Riders feel that an aux tank is one of the most essential farkles that one can add to your bike.

Plus, it's really cool to pull up to a gas station and fill the bike in two places and watch people look at you funny. LOL

Wait until you become old, then you stop a lot to pee.

Since I'm now 50, and approaching all those problems, i'm actually reading with some interest. I just had my 50yr "inspection", and am happy to report all is well.

Sorry, Maura...I know, TMI...but at least it's GOOD I.
