For instance. A year or two ago I went out and bought a new rubber faced oil drain plug washer at NAPA ($4) in case I ever need it, considering the opinions of others on the subject. Since all of the oil sumps on my vehicles remain clean and dry I havnt used it but its there should I find one is leaking while I do an oil change.

And now for an observation and a little math.

I do not believe I have ever in my 61 years had to buy or change an oil drain plug washer. The sump is always clean and dry in my experience. Lets consider our two cars. The wifes car is 13 years old and has averaged about 3 oil changes a year. My car is 8 years old and averages 2 oil changes a year. thats 39 + 16 washers X $4 a washer is $220! $220!!!

And that goes back just 13 years! If you went back 40 years its more like $800.

I bought a package of crush washers at the Honda car dealer (same washer).
It was a pretty good number of washers and pretty cheap.

I've looked up Toyota rubber faced washers on Amazon and they're a dollar each. NAPA rib ripped me off!

I work in a bicycle shop and we routinely have the cheap crap from Amazon come in for repairs.

If you can afford to buy a high-dollar bike, like a BMW, why squawk about the repair cost? We owned a Mercedes for awhile. It was the best overall operating car I have ever owned. Unfortunately, after it crossed 100,000mi. the repair costs, and body rust made it too expensive to hang on to.

What year was your Mercedes?

I'm not rich so I tend to squawk when something doesn't work or cost me a lot of money!

Nice try, but Al is much better at dissipating heat (and helping cooling the oil) than steel.

Yes! The older ones, like my 79 240D, could be owned indefinitely. The parts were cheap for the most part ($20 for a brake rotor) unlike today where a strut cartridge is $1100. Its not just the parts, the over all complexity has gone up an order of magnitude also. A separate computer controls everything from the cooling system to the AC. A special scan tool is required for diagnostics, also $$$$.

Dont think this is going unnoticed by other manufacturers. Higher costs/complexity mean higher profits! If the suckers I mean the public wants higher performance, higher safety, uber coolness, Mercedes and others will MAKE THEM PAY!

Its like drug addiction. The public are the addicts and the manufacturers the dealers. The drug dealers dont care if their clients die (theres always another one) and the car companies dont care if their buyers go broke buying their cars.

On CBS news this morning they had the CEO of Target on a few months ago. One of the reporters confronted him with the fact that Target employs psychologists to design ways to get shoppers to buy more than they wanted when they visit Target. This leads to running up charge cards of $30,000 which can never be paid off at the interest rates they charge.

The CEO's reaction?

"I LOVE it when that happens!"
