Exclamation Engine whine/whistle st1300

greetings all, having recently joined the forum i see plenty of help and advice.
I recently sold my 91 st 1100 (lovely bike , never a days problem) and have bought a 2008 st1300 ABS and again what a great bike, however i find the engine has what i believe to be a higher than normal engine whine or whistle is this normal ? down here in South Africa we dont have many St's so advise is limited, any comment appreciated.

That sound is normal for the ST. If people want to know what that sound is tell them it is your turbo kicking in. The ST is oveall such a great bike that we have to overlook some of the less desirable idiosyncracies (sp?). You won't find a better overall motorcycle anywhere. Enjoy!! and "keep the shiny side up".

Without being there to hear it myself, I am going to agree with SlowPoke. This engine has a very distinct "whine", I always thought it was due to the counterbalancers. You don't need to worry unless it stops making that noise.
Enjoy your bike.

thanks , i did read somewhere one can adjust the counterbalancers but why fix it if its not broke, I like the turbo thought, will wait for the next comment from someone. I can nonly agree on it being a great bike, so very reliable, planning a 6000km trip this december with the wife, and from experience with my 1100 i just do the basics tyres ,oil brakes etc and i ride without a worry with these bikes

Yep, that's the Pan whistle (they are called Pan Europeans over here). Because the engine is such a quiet one, the sound of the running gear comes through as a relatively loud whistle/whine. It is absolutely normal. The only ST1300 I have ever found not making that noise, was one where the engine wasn't running!
