Default Permit Me To Introduce Myself...

I have been riding since.... 1975? Cant remember. I had an ST11 in the 90s and now I just got an ST13.

I am here because I got banned from the "other" ST site. I think I got on their nerves. I would post things like "Ways the ST 11 is better than the ST13" and "Why Doesnt the ST Have Belt Drive?" I got bad vibes from that. Well I didnt get banned up front. Every time I log on the computer doesnt load the site. If I dont log on it works fine. I think they are trying to tell me something? They didnt tell me up front what the problem was. I DID do something a little dumb. When Osama got his the other day I posted "Obama got His". See the difference is a "B" and an "S". My bad! Freudian slip maybe? Anyway I didnt get any official notice. Just the difficulty logging on.

I gave them money too!

So I hope I dont wear out my welcome here. Im not confrontational or anything and try to help when people have questions I (think) I know the answer to. If I get on your nerves please tell me! I dont have anywhere else to go and like to post and read other posts about the ST.

Thanks!

Yeah, the forum software allows the administrator to make it appear there's a problem logging on. You'll find we're a lot more tolerant here. You'll also find a fair bit of criticism of Mellow's heavy handed moderation on that other site.

As long as you don't get personal, you can post pretty much any opinion you want.

Welcome.

Howdy Echo,

I hope you enjoy our forum. We're much mellower (pun intended) here. ;-)

I dimly remember 1975. That's the year I graduated from High School. I was bikeless then but, I had just sold my Honda SL90 dual sport the year before when we moved down to Tacoma, WA from Anchorage, AK. Didn't get another street bike till 1998 and it was a '98 ST1100 ABS II. Great bike! I had dirt bikes but, only really rode them during Deer Hunting season with my father and his buddies.

What you got over at ST-Owners is called the "Miserable User" mod. It's an add-in for vBulletin (the s/w that this forum and theirs runs on) that makes it difficult or next to impossible to do anything on their site. It's pretty chicken-shit.

Apparently, in some cases, they don't even bother to tell "the offending member" that you've been "bad". They just apply the mod and let you sit. Nice, huh?

It happened to me twice - once when I pointed out to Joe "Mellow" that he could get in trouble with the law for stealing others Copywrite protected articles even though they were posted on his forum by the author. You see, he erased all indications for who originally authored the tech articles and put his name on it instead. When the true authors complained, they were banned. However, I think my argument about how he could be sued (even though his silly little forum "rules" stated that anything posted on his forum became his property), actually sunk into his head as he got wise and removed the articles. It seems that U.S. Copywrite laws supercede any silly forum "rules". LOL

All this was behind the scenes, of course. Anything that got posted publicly was deleted almost instantly.

Later, I got the same treatment again when I complained about how he treated Dick Seng when Dick complained about Motorcycle Larry copying his light bracket designs. Mellow again just applied the "Miserable User Mod" to Dick and then me for complaining about it publicly.

Mr. Joe likes to pretend he's this nicey-nice super guy and very religious but, he's been caught doing some pretty two-faced hypocritical things in the past.

You're better off without him.

BTW, if you want to talk about ST1100's here, feel free. We have a section for that or, you can post in the General section. Also, there is another forum (actually the offshoot of the original ST1100 forum) at www.ST-Riders.net. They're a great group of guys and gals and a lot of them still have their ST1100's and they talk about them all the time. They do have some rules like - you have to have your real name as your screen name. But, they're pretty liberal other than that. Way better than Mellow's ST-Owners forum.

Pretty much, the only rules we have here is "be nice to each other" and no hard porn. This is a family forum, after all. That said, some suggestive jokes and pictures have been known to slip their way in occassionally but, I pretty much ignore it unless it happens too much.

Another rule for Vendors advertizing is to keep those in the Vendor section.

Other than that, have fun, enjoy yourself, and hopefully; you'll find our forum useful.

Best regards,

Yikes. Sounds like hes like an iceberg. 10% above the surface 90% below the surface.

Personally I wonder: does freedom of speech apply to the internet? I didnt do anything and just spoke my mind. But he doesnt seem to allow that. Is that legal?

The answer is "no." Freedom of Speech doesn't apply to private internet sites. The constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech applies to government, not private endeavors. Mellow is legally entitled to enforce whatever silly rules he wants on his forum.

As an FYI, this was posted by Mellow today:

Quote:
FYI - this member has been banned.

I un-deleted this as someone informed me this member is posting on another site and making it sound like this was a surprise. Several warnings and previous posts deletes had occurred prior to this action.

It was getting to the point we had to spend so much time monitoring this member that it just wasn't worth it. If you are a friend of this member, I'm very sorry for this action however, it's my call.

The member does not have a valid email address associated with this account, so I cannot contact him... however, I found the cancelled check for his site support and will be sending him a full refund.

This is a closed thread and if you have any questions please PM me directly.

Huh. There were bad vibes but no "warnings". Nothing like "dont do this again". Post deletes yes. I did not understand why. I didnt think I said anything THAT bad. The "Obama" thing was my mistake but it was not intentional. As far as I know I DID give them my email.

Thankyou for the lesson in free speech. I didnt think that was the case but it is. I didnt know.

Oh well thankyou for the closure.

I feel pretty bad about this. I dont think I did anything wrong. This whole thing is pretty seriously crazy.

Join the crowd. I believe Joe Norris, AKA "Mellow," is a "Control freak." Strange guy. I wonder what he is like in person? If he is the same way he must have to go to the ER a lot!

If what Mellow says is true - that he was removing you from his forum, why didn't he do that? Removing your account is permanent. Applying the "Miserable User" mod is temporary (i.e., it can be easily removed) but, it is more "vindictive" to the member as most members don't know what it is and will waste a lot of time trying to login thinking that there really is an issue with the server.

When he did that to me, someone told me that he said that he sent me a Private Message just before explaining his actions. Well, I call "B.S." on that because, guess what, I never received it. One has to be able to login to his forum TO receive a Private Message of explanation.

Duh.

Frankly, I'm sure that Mellow is just trying to cover his butt and make himself look good when he posted that "explanation". That's his M.O.

I've since quit caring what he does. As he said, "It was getting to the point ... that it just wasn't worth it."

;-)

Don't let it bother you, Echo. And for the record, we don't care what you say about Obama or Osama here... as long as you don't start a "holy war" of words.

LOL

You know it is his (Mellow's) site and he is free to run it how he likes it. The mods are careful over there to avoid flaming and name calling, personal attacks, etc., and try their best to keep a nice friendly environment for all. That is one of things I like about that site. I have personally met Mellow and he is a nice guy.

It is possible that one of the other moderators "banned" you, although regardless of who it was, I would hope they would give you a forewarning or send you a message when they did it explaining why. I am sure if you send him an email he will respond with a civil answer as to why (if) you are banned.

Anyway it is good to see you here.

Stephani,

What you say about how he runs his forum is true but, I've had a lot of dealings with Mellow over the years - one on one. So, most of what I say and my opinion of Joe are gleened from those conversations, not what happened to Echo.

Echo, if you are nice and promise not to ever be "bad" again, I think Stefani is correct. Joe may let you back on his forum. It might be worth a try. (shrug)
