A quick search of the IBA website will give you the EXACT rules. They are pretty straightforward. If you have questions or need help with interpretation, then we can help you.

Basically you have to have a signed witness at the beginning and end of your ride and you have to document each gas stop with a receipt that shows the date. Obviously you must complete 1000 miles in less than 24 hours. You cannot use a repetitive loop to accomplish the total miles. More detail at the IB site as mentioned.

I did it officially back when I had my 1100 on the way home from WeSTOC in Durango. Once was enough for me - different strokes as they say, though I did unofficially accomplish another SS1000 on the way back from WeSTOC in Sooke this year. Rode from Yakima to my home in Ventura in about 18 hours.

Well, actually, you can go from point A to point B, then back to point A if it totals 1,000 miles. That's what I did. Four other guys and I rode from Knoxville, TN to Lake City, FL and back. It took us 18 hours. We made our gas/stretch stops, lunch and dinner. In between those we were humpin' down the highway! We received our obligatory, pins, patches, license plate frame and certificate for completing it.

Be sure to read the rules on the IBA website carefully. You don't want to do that ride and then be disqualified because you missed something.

Yeah I should have been more clear, a single loop is OK but you can't pick out say a 200 mile loop and then ride it 5 times and expect to qualify.

eActually, in special circumstances, you can.

Several people did this on the island of Hawaii a few years ago.

Plus, there is something called an "In State" SS1000 that falls into that kind of route.

For something like that, I think you have to get approval ahead of time from the IBA. There should be a contact alias on their web site.

For one's first IBA ride , it is highly recommended/ expected that you do a straightforward ride , exactly according to the guidelines. Special rides that are repetitive in nature are extreme rides, and require experience and pre-approval. You are unlikely to get that on your first ride.

Quote from the above noted (by Paul) website.

"We strongly discourage, and in some cases may reject, routes that are repetitive in nature. For example, we would not accept a claim that you rode five round-trips between Daytona Beach, Florida and Jacksonville, a distance of only 95 miles..."

So please, first time IB riders, read the rules and do exactly what the rules say. Many people will be happy to help you prepare yourself and your bike, select your route, and give advice to increase your chances of success, also help you with witnessing, but many have little patience for rookies who want to skirt the rules, parsing them for weird exceptional, unconventional ways of doing things.

IBA rides are great fun, I highly recommend them. I do at least one per year.
