Default FYI: Race Tech looking for ST1300 for R&D

Date: Wed, 11 May 2011 16:51:27 -0700

From Race Tech's FB page.

We are looking for a ST1300 '04-10 to R&D some components. We are primarily interested in the forks and will offer our R&D discount of 40% off of RT labor and parts. Please contact Christie with any questions. 951-279-6655 x107

Hmm, you give them your bike to use as a guinea pig, and still have to pay for the parts (albeit at a 40% discount)? Sounds pretty cheap on the part of RaceTech. Beta testers ought to get the product for free.

Reading through this earlier I thought the same thing.. More like , I'll rent you my bike and riding services and I'll give them a 25% discount. If I don't like their mods , they put it back to the way it was.

I think you're thinking about this all wrong, fellas.

Look at our economy today. It sucks.

Think of this as a win-win for both parties and a partnership where the rider gets a good discount on a new product and some personal 1-on-1 time with an expert in suspensions and the company gets a bike, a partner, and can spread the cost of development just a little bit.

If nothing else, call them and ask what the new product is and what it will do. Then, if you don't like the idea, don't volunteer.

But, I wouldn't dismiss it without more knowledge right off the bat.

I've had 2 RaceTech suspensions now - one on my '98 ST1100 and now one on my '03 ST1300 that I did in our Group Buy with them 2 years ago (which reminds me, I should call them and setup another for this year).

Not saying that you might not be right. Just saying I think you're jumping to conclusions with not enough facts.

I would have volunteered but, my bike is an '03.

I'm kinda bugged because I just installed gold valves in my forks and now they're working on something potentially better . I would look at this as a pretty good opportunity if I hadn't already spent a bunch of dough with them. Wonder if they give recent customers any special consideration?

I don't thinks its wrong to dismiss right off the bat. Companies R&D is a business cost and part of their business model, and that issue is dealt with at the end of their fiscal year with their CPA. Companies requesting consumer assistance for product development and/or testing usually offer the product FREE, and/or compensation for the consumers time and travel, since they are writing it off.

The 40% off discount bothers my the most. 40% off a retail price they set, if they offered at actual cost, or standard company employee discount actual cost +10%, I would consider it and think it fair.

Not sure how your seeing it as a partnership, are they going to sponsor you , off set your riding expenses somehow by you advertising their product .. don't see it .. it's just a plain consumer purchase and they reap the benefits for future product sales... Yes the economy suck's and its a consumer market.. JMHO .. enjoy ..

Well then, call them and tell them your point of view. Maybe they'll work with you and you can get it for free.

And, let us know what they're working on. (wink, wink)

Unfortunately, there's no way to mail them from their Facebook page that I can tell.

I guess the part that bothers me isn't the 40% discount on the parts, I could live with that. My haggle would be with the labor charge. Why should they charge labor for something they're developing?
