Default What BMW is Getting To Change Your Oil.

Youd have to be completely out of your gourd to let them work on your mchine! Note the crush washer is $9 and they spec a new drain plug every other change. Nuts!

Paul I have a question for you. If you owned a BMW and they said to change the drain plug every other oil change, would you do it?

It seemed like a legitimate question, to me.

Seems like a legitimate question to me too. If BMW's reason for changing the oil plug every other oil change was found to be legitimate - then I would be questioning my purchase of the BMW.

Here, done to death.

http://www.st1300.us.com/showthread....t=crush+washer

I am surprised the Mods on this site let this shit persist. Its like an episode of Jeremy Kyle, the second post is inflammatory, indeed the first post just rakes up what has already been discussed to keep Echo's ego happy.
This thread should have just been deleted, no questions just gone, Even Echo knows this, he's sniggering behind a keyboard while other potentially useful future members click on the top right X to never return.
I cant believe you let this carry on.

I know virtually nothing (OK, really, nothing) about the particular motor this discussion is about. However, I've worked on a few different ones, so let me pose some thoughts...

Without going into too much engineering, we've already determined it's considered "good practice" to replace the crush washer when you remove/install the drain plug. Can we at least agree on that? Partially?

Even if you only grudgingly agree that "most people" think and believe it's a good idea, we move on...

In your average car (bear with me, here), with an aluminum pan and a steel plug, it's been known to happen, on several occasions, that the average mechanic will over-tighten the drain plug (which is yet another reason to change them, but I digress), and over time, it will damage the threads on the aluminum oil pan. The only fix is to replace the pan - from a dealer/designer perspective. We're not talking aftermarket solutions, here...we're talking dealers, engineers and designers.

With these thoughts in my head, the thought process goes like this: Let's make an engine with a steel pan (it's a bike, sure it's got a tiny bit of extra weight, but it's pretty darned small - not to mention low with regard to center of gravity) and use aluminum drain plugs. Then, we just replace the plug every other drain, and we'll never have to replace the pan - which may require pulling the engine, an excess of wiring, nuts and blots, engine mounts, intakes, exhausts, etc.

Now, I'm not a BMW engineer, but it seems perfectly plausible to me.

And to finish it off, no, I didn't follow any of the links, I won't read stoners, and I don't really care about BMW. I just want people to realize there may actually be a smarter reason behind the decision than you might be aware of.

I have not read any of this thread.
Seeing who started it and is the majority poster within it told me everything I needed to know about this thread.

AND

Who gives a flying rats ass what BMW is charging to change oil.
This is a ST forum.

Two real easy ways to over tighten a oil drain plug.
Not using a Torque Wrench set to manufacture spec.
Not using a new sealing washer, commonly known as a crush washer.

They are called crush washers for a reason.
They are soft they crush.
The crush is used up every time the washer is torqued to spec.
The reason you use a new one every time is the crush is part of the torque spec.
No crush your torque is off.

Crush washers are cheap.
Oil pan thread repair is not.

Why try to out engineer professional engineers to save 75¢.
Change your frigging crush washer and quite whining about them.

Hmm I read the link to Wikipedia and quote "internet troll" and I categorically deny that I am trying to cause anyone a problem or get amusement out of the posts of others.

As far as the crush washers (or sparkplugs or motor oil etc) its my opinion that anyone can approach these things as they please and do whatever they think they ought to do about them. Or say whatever they want about them. Its good to hear the opinion of others and consider it as at times we may benefit from a close examination of our beliefs and actions.
