At work all night. On the last leg of my commute home I ran a lower gear to get my RPMs above 3900. 8 seconds later, RED FI light.

Wife had ECU waiting on kitchen table for when I arrived this morning. Quickly installed new to me ECU. Did not take time to strap into proper position. Ran the bike. Ran the bike some more. Finally, U-turned and went home.

NO CODE!

Tired now, going to get some sleep. Will run some more this afternoon before work. I think I got it.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding something here to do with swopping the ECU. The keys on my ST1300 have a black plastic 'handle' which contains a chip that unlocks the HISS system and allows the bike to be started. When I broke the only key that I had, 6 years ago, the bike was disabled and had to be recovered to the dealers. I bought 3 new keys, and the bike/keys had to be programmed by the dealer to to allow all of these keys to start the bike. My belief was that the ECU held the programming and that changing the ECU meant that a re-programming exercise would be required. Both my ST1300 owning friend and I are of the belief that his ECU will not work on my bike, and vice versa, without re-programming. However, in this forum, the thread on broken keys shows USA keys without the black chip. Is there an inherent difference in this respect between US and UK/Euro bikes or am I simply wrong?

We do not have the HISS anti-theft program on our bikes.
Different computer no chipped key.

Yes, (again) Paul is correct. There is no HISS on the US spec bikes. Our keys have no chip of any kind.

I was hoping for some other vague indication from the bike that the ECU was different (better). I was unable to feel or hear any difference in the performance of the ST.

I am going to go ride it here shortly before and to work. I am not as happy as I thought I would be. Maybe I am still worried that red light is going to come back on.

Well, I made it to work.

I kept Ole Blue in a lower gear to keep the revs above 4000 as much as possible. I never saw the dreaded red light come on. The further I went, the better I felt. By the time I got to work, I did not want to go to work.

It may have been the "placebo effect" but I would swear that the further I rode this evening the better the bike ran. This morning I never noticed a difference but this evening there seemed to be less vibration in the pegs. I spun the rear tire at every intersection where I had to make a turn and that is not so easy with the PR3.

At any rate, for now, the ST is running like it is supposed to. I am happy again.
