Default Results Of Brake FLuid Testing!

Originally I wanted to have a third party test the two bottles of 3 and six year old brake fluid I have. The idea was for them to write up the results so I could post them. This would demonstrate impartiality.

Unfortunately this proved impossible. The only test equipment owned by garages proved to be test strips one garage had but these were from a previously opened package. Thus they were exposed to moisture in the air and so suspect.

So I asked for and received a brake fluid tester for Xmas. This measures the electrical resistance of the brake fluid and from that determines moisture content. There are five lights one for ON, one for <1%, one for 2%, one for 3% and one for >4% moisture content. According to the marking on the instrument <1% and two percent are considered acceptable while 3 and 4% arent.

As I thought both bottles of brake fluid tested <1% moisture content.

After that I tested the brake fluid of my wifes Camry which is 12+ years old and has 138k miles on it. Whiles it on its second set of brake pads the brake fluid has never been bled or changed.

This also tested <1%! Which calls into question the accuracy of the instrument!

I plan to mix in a little water into a new bottle of brake fluid (which I dont have) and see if the device detects it.

OK so I added 5 ml of water to 200 ml of brake fluid fresh out of the bottle. 5/200=2.5% moisture content"

Then I retested and got 2% on the meter, repeatedly.

So the meter works!

Why didn't you add this to the original thread?

Dont know it was the result of a polyanna. Thats where relatives draw each others name out of a hat to buy xmas presents. But the limit for each gift is $25.

I'd still add it to the original thread.

back to brake fluid issue as I have said before.....Brakes and steering....every thing else is optional....Change your brake fluid regularly, if it is discolored it has moisture in it. It will still stop you (unless it is turning to steam). The problem you will have is with the seals and metallic components breaking down especially aluminium and with todays ABS systems you know changing the parts ain,t cheap. At least change it when you change the pads and shoes. If it is done at a regular shop and not changed .. time to find another shop

I had my Honda dealer change my fluids.
I asked to have brake and clutch fluid changed but they said the clutch fluid was not discolored, so they didn't change it.
I wanted both done, so they would be on the same schedule.
Our Honda shops are not very close, or convenient, anymore.
