Default SMC question.

For anyone that has stripped out a SMC, can I ask how free should the piston be, with no fluid in it is the internal spring strong enough to allow the piston to come beyond where it would normally sit with the circlip in place or does the fluid play a part in lubricating the device.
I have had mine to bits and when empty the piston is moving fairly easily but not bouncing out, just moving rather sluggishly, I just wondered how free it should be?
Ta.
