Goldwing tip over bars. Chrome or Black?

Has anyone tried painting the Goldwing tip over bars black rather than keeping them chrome? I just purchased a set for my ST on Ebay, and I really prefer black over the chrome look.

Just curious as to the prep work that would be required to ensure the paint will last as long as possible.

Thanks.

Paint or powder coat them.

Painting over chrome is difficult.
Powder Coating over chrome is near impossible.
Surface prep for paint almost dictates the removal of the chrome and the layer of copper under the chrome.
Acid dip is the only way to remove it I know of.
Serious acid and a electric charge is used.
Not home use friendly.
Surface prep for Power dictates removal.
Neither is really a option.

Aren't there painted bag protectors for that GL1800 model without the topcase?

The black saddlebag guards are made for the FB1800. They are powder coated at the factory.

You may want to consider selling the chrome bars and repurchasing the black bars.

What's wrong with the Bygdawg Bars?
Proven to work and work extremely well.
I personally tested mine at a little over 20mph and a slide down the street 30 yards.
No damage what so ever, skinned paint.
Not inexpensive, price a saddlebag, but well made excellent protection.
Made of solid bar stock not tubing.
High quality manufacture.
Powder Coated black, also of high quality.
Bolt right on because they were made FOR the ST.
Worth every penny.
Ask those that tested them in real world situations.

I don't leave home without them.

Nothing wrong with the bygdawg bars at all. I liked the looks of the GW bars and like the price as well. I also like how they don't take away space from the passenger foot rest.

Big Dawg and GL guards both work, but the discussion was about black vs. chrome.

There also are black saddlebag guards from Motorcycle Larry.

And, for the record, I installed the GL1800FB guards. They look great, don't interfere with the passenger pegs, and are rock solid even if they are not solid metal.

Ride safe, y'all.
